Croydon: a major south London town with a Surrey heritage

Croydon is a major town in south London, with a historic Surrey identity and a substantial town centre of shops, offices, cultural venues and homes. It is the main centre of the London Borough of Croydon. The town itself has several distinct settings, from the streets around East Croydon station to the older shopping streets and the neighbourhoods beyond the centre.

Centrale and the Whitgift Centre are prominent parts of the shopping area around North End. Their operator publishes a current directory of shops and places to eat. The centres sit within a town centre that continues to change: Croydon Council has described proposals to refresh Centrale's entrances and frontage. Proposed regeneration should be distinguished from facilities already open.

Fairfield Halls is a major cultural venue in the town centre. Reopened in 2019 after refurbishment, it provides a focus for performance and forms part of the council's plans for the Fair Field cultural quarter. The Museum of Croydon and Croydon Archives provide another route into the history of the town and its communities.

Transport is an important part of Croydon's role. East Croydon has rail connections to London Bridge and London Victoria, with tram stops outside the station. The tram network links different parts of the town and surrounding areas. East Croydon and West Croydon are separate stations, so the route from a prospective home to the service you actually use matters. Check the current timetable for the journey you intend to make.

There are green spaces close to the urban centre. Wandle Park has the River Wandle running through it, while Lloyd Park is another established park in the wider town. Their locations offer different options depending on where you live; a central flat and a home further out will have different access to parks and transport.

When comparing properties, distinguish Croydon town from the whole borough. The position relative to a station, the main shopping streets and evening venues is more useful than treating every Croydon postal address as the same setting.
