Some houses have names simply because somebody once gave them one. Others seem to grow into them. Treevers means “peace and tranquillity” in Norwegian – and spend a little time here and the name begins to make perfect sense.
There is a wonderfully calm feel to this detached family home. The open paddocks create a surprisingly rural outlook; to the rear, the mature garden feels private and established. Yet behind the fairly understated exterior is a house designed very much for everyday family life.
Although lovingly looked after and nurtured by the current owners for over 30 years, there is the potential and clear precedent to adapt and extend the house to make it suit your own needs subject to the necessary planning consents.
Step inside and Treevers begins to reveal rather more personality than you might expect.
The entrance hall immediately feels different, with an exposed brick wall and open staircase adding warmth and character. From here, the ground floor divides naturally between the spaces where everyone comes together and those where you can find somewhere quieter.
At the heart of the house is the kitchen/dining room. This is a genuine everyday living space rather than simply a kitchen large enough to accommodate a table. The contemporary fitted kitchen occupies one end, while the dining area sits alongside French doors opening directly onto the garden.
It is easy to picture how the room changes with the seasons. Doors open to the garden for breakfast on a summer morning; family and friends gathered around the table at weekends; somewhere warm and welcoming to retreat to when autumn arrives.
The separate sitting room provides the counterpoint. Comfortable and nicely proportioned, with its own doors onto the terrace and garden but the double aspect also gives you views over the open paddock land. It is somewhere to close the door at the end of the day. That separation is one of the things that makes the layout work particularly well – family life doesn't always require everybody to be in the same room.
And neither does working from home have to mean balancing a laptop on the kitchen table.
Treevers has a proper home office, already fitted with extensive desk space, shelving and storage. For anyone working regularly from home, studying or running a business, it is a room that can simply get on with the job from day one.
The principal bedroom is a generous room with an excellent amount of fitted storage, while the remaining accommodation offers flexibility for family, guests, dressing space or hobbies. Built-in wardrobes feature prominently, helping keep the bedrooms themselves uncluttered, while the modern family shower room completes the first-floor accommodation.
But perhaps the character of Treevers is best understood outside.
The rear garden isn't an immaculate blank canvas created simply for photographs. It is a proper, established garden – mature trees and shrubs, areas of lawn and planting, and a broad terrace running immediately behind the house. It has texture, shade and places to sit.
This is where the name Treevers feels particularly appropriate. Peace and tranquillity is not simply a translation attached to the house; it describes rather well the atmosphere inside and outside the home. Sit on the terrace, look into the greenery and there is a feeling of being tucked away from everything. Have a coffee on the front porch and the outlook opens up across the neighbouring paddocks, horses graze against a backdrop of trees and open land. It is an unexpectedly rural view and gives the house breathing space that many family homes simply do not have.
There are practicalities too, of course. Driveway parking and an attached garage take care of cars, bikes, storage and all the paraphernalia that inevitably accompanies family life.
Put your boots on and head straight out of the house to explore any number of walks on your doorstep and why not call into White Lion Antiques for a browse while taking time to enjoy the cafe before you head home.
The much sought after village of Hartley Wintney is just a short walk up the hill offering an active High Street with a broad range of privately owned boutique shops. These include restaurants, cafés, delis, pubs, organic food and wine merchants, beauticians, clothing, arts and antique outlets. There is also a Doctor’s surgery, Dentist, Post Office, Pharmacy, optician and dry cleaners for the more.
The village has at its beating heart the historic Hartley Wintney Cricket Club, which dates back to 1770 and is believed to be the oldest permanently played cricket ground in England.
Hartley Wintney offers easy access to the A30, M3 and Winchfield station is approximately 2 miles away providing access to London Waterloo in an hour.
Treevers isn't a house trying too hard to impress. Its appeal is quieter than that. It is a comfortable, individual family home with space to be together, space to work, space to retreat, the potential to extend – and, rather fittingly, a little peace and tranquillity of its own.
